Bitmaps are rather large files that take a painful amount of time to load compared to size even on faster connections due to having no compression to them whatsoever. This wasn't much an issue with older formats, as they used less colors and generally wound up smaller due to the resolutions at the time. since most bitmaps are by default going to be 16-bit now, the file size is inherently bigger before you do a thing to them.

That said, most sites don't support BMP between the size and the fact most people don't want to wait on the things to load. For a lossless format that's more accepted and avoids being outright huge, you'll probably want to use PNG, or lacking that settle for JPEG.
